“I don’t know how” is no longer a valid reason. It’s an excuse.
A very weak excuse.
In 2014, it’s just pathetic really.
No one ever knew how to do anything, until they learned the first time.
There are many obstacles that stand between us and our goals, but not knowing how to do something shouldn’t be one of them.
Well that’s easy for YOU to say, you’re smart. I’m just not smart enough…
Negativity is a self-sabotaging weakness that we all must strive to eliminate.
Get those limiting beliefs out of your head now!
Instead, try focusing on the positive.
Ask Yourself Why
Why don’t you know how to do whatever it is that you think you can’t?
Simple answer, you haven’t figured out how yet.
Ok, so why haven’t you figured it out yet?
Too lazy? Intimidated by the task? Not enough time?
Excuses, all of them.
The real question is, why do you want to do the thing you don’t know how to do?
Let’s say you want to start a business. Why?
To be successful..
Everyone wants to be successful. That’s not a good enough reason why.
I want to not have a boss and make a good living…
Closer, but why don’t you want to have a boss?
I want the freedom to live life on my terms. I want to travel when I feel like it. I want to control my income.
Bingo. That’s the why!
Find your why, because you’re going to need it when things get tough.
How to Start Something When You Don’t Know How
I think starting from scratch offers some great advantages. Not having any information can be very advantageous.
There are 2 reasons why I say this:
- You haven’t already established any bad habits by using outdated or low quality information.
- Too much information is worse than not enough information. It leads to paralysis by analysis, a precursor to procrastination.
Just think of it like this – if you don’t know anything, it can only get better from here, right?
Build a strong foundation.
First things first, you need to master the basics.
If you look at top performers in business, sports, poker, chess, investing, and virtually everything else you’ll notice one common similarity that sets apart the elite from the great – they are masters of the fundamentals.
The elite performers have weaknesses, but rarely with the fundamentals.
For example, let’s look at some NBA legends that you are likely familiar with.
Shaquille O’Neal is without a doubt one of the best NBA players to play the game. Shaq has won championships, MVP awards, and everything else in between. However, we all know what his weakness was. That simple little free throw shot.
Shaq will never be brought into the conversation with Michael Jordan as the greatest NBA player of all time.
Micheal Jordan is truly elite because he was a master of the fundamentals. There wasn’t a shot he couldn’t make. For those too young to know about this, watch this video of MJ shooting a free throw with his eyes closed.
Skip to 45 seconds in to see the shot.
All the advanced stuff doesn’t matter if you don’t master the fundamentals first.
Now you won’t master the basics overnight. The road to mastery is long and hard.
If you want to be like Mike, you will need to make a very strong habit of practicing your craft relentlessly.
For now, you just need to get a good understanding of the fundamentals. Don’t worry about being an expert right away.
So how do you get started?
You can learn everything about anything on the internet.
Find some good blogs and read through their best material. Check out some YouTube videos. YouTube is an incredible resource. There is very little that you cannot learn on YouTube.
Aside from online resources, I personally like to read a book on the subject. Don’t worry about finding the best book at first, as that is completely subjective. Just start with one of those For Dummies books. I know a lot of people look down on those books, but they are written by experts in the field and they really are organized well for a beginner. I’ve read several over the years.
They’ve created a book for nearly every hobby, career and subject known to man at this point. Once you’ve read through that book, narrow down the more specific aspects you want to learn about and find the best books for those specific things.
Start Quickly and Build Momentum
The best thing you can do is take action now and adjust as you go.
It’s easy to get caught up in making the right decision. Don’t worry about that. Just make a decision – any decision- and follow through on it!
You can always make adjustments as needed along the way. You want to take advantage of the boost of motivation that comes with taking on a new challenge.
Motivation is a luxury that comes and goes. Make the most of it when you have it.
I don’t care what anyone says, you aren’t going to be motivated every single day. You have to have some discipline to push yourself through the days where you aren’t feeling motivated.
That said, the best way to build and sustain motivation is to build and sustain momentum.
At least, that’s what has worked for me.
Not pursuing a dream because you don’t know how is shameful.
You’re admitting defeat before you even get started. That’s a strategy for losers.
Winners welcome challenge and overcome obstacles.
Figure out what you want to do, figure out why you want to do it and for god’s sake get started on it!
You won’t be an expert right off the bat, but the good news is that no one is born an expert.
Take action now, master the basics and adjust as you go.
As always, make progress or make excuses.
Until Next Time,
