From the day you start elementary to the day you decide you no longer want to climb higher in your career — the work never ends.
We’re promised a dream where we work really hard for a short period of time and then kick back and relax while the cash rolls in.
That can happen, but it usually doesn’t. In most cases, you have to keep pushing harder to get to higher levels.
The work never ends.
I’ve spent time with a lot of successful people in a wide variety of industries and the biggest common denominator is a track record of hard work over long hours.
The better you get, the more challenges you take on, and the more you realize the work never ends.
Work with Purpose
If you want to live a great life, there’s going to be work involved.
Why not do work that serves a purpose?
You don’t have to know what you want to do for the rest of your life right now, but it helps when you do work that will benefit the rest of your life.
By that, I mean the work you do now builds skills you can apply later in life — even if you’ve since taken a different direction in your career.
For example, when I waited tables I learned sales by A/B testing different phrases to persuade customers to purchase more items and specific items from the menu. Then when I sold eyeglasses I adapted and improved that same practice to set new sales records for the region.
Then, of course, those sales skills helped me start multiple businesses.
As long as you learn from the work and the work helps you make progress towards your long-term vision, your work has a purpose.
Embrace the Work
Some people fear the work.
They avoid the work at all costs.
Fuck those people.
You embrace the work.
Eventually, the work becomes more fun than the results.
The work is where you learn and improve.
The work is what sets you apart from the mediocre.
You take pleasure in knowing you will do what they won’t to get what they can’t.
The Work Isn’t Sexy
The work isn’t appealing at first because the work isn’t sexy.
Usually, the work involves sitting at a computer for long hours in a row or something equally as boring.
That’s why people don’t talk about the work. It’s not entertaining to talk about.
The work goes largely unnoticed.
But the results from the work get noticed.
The work never ends until you decide you’re satisfied with the results.
That’s why I believe it’s important to do work you enjoy, work that you’re good at, and work that provides a good life for you.
It doesn’t have to be your passion.
But if the work never ends, you at least want to enjoy yourself along the way, right?
If you like working long hours, you’ll love my book because it doesn’t take very long to read.
